Smartr365: Hi Billy – first of all, welcome to Smartr365!
Billy Grimley: Thank you! I’m really looking forward to getting started.
Smartr365: Firstly, can you tell us a bit about what your day to day role at Smartr365 will be?
BG: My role at Smartr365 will be to bring the customer service, sales and marketing parts of the business together through a cohesive commercial strategy. It’s my primary objective to make sure we have excellent customer success processes in place to make sure users are getting maximum value from the platform both during and after their initial purchase.
Smartr365: It’s interesting to see the emphasis you place on customer success; do you think that’s the biggest opportunity to the mortgage industry at the moment?
BG: Absolutely. There’s a growing appreciation of the ‘experience’ economy, digital cloud-based products and the subscription model amongst all businesses. These are the roots of the customer success model. I’m excited to help integrate them into the mortgage industry to make the application process a more accessible and enjoyable experience for everyone.
Smartr365: Do you see any major challenges currently facing the mortgage industry?
BG: The biggest obstacle is probably getting the famously hesitant mortgage industry to adopt tech and begin viewing the mortgage process as something that SaaS technology can improve.
We’ve seen the industry taking the ‘if it’s not broken, don’t fix it’ approach when it comes to mortgage applications; it’s functional at the moment, but we can do better.
Smartr365: And where do you see the market heading in the longer term?
BG: For a while now, Smartr365 has been showing brokers of today what the broker of the future could achieve through a more sophisticated use of tech. This includes paperless offices and opportunities to work remotely.
The change in circumstances forced by COVID-19 has actually benefitted the mortgage industry because it has promoted an acceleration of tech amongst businesses who need to work more flexibly now.
I think it’s essential that these advancements aren’t abandoned when the lockdown is lifted and we continue to developing technology to make the mortgage process as accessible as possible.
Smartr365: What about when you’re not at work – tell us a little about what you like to do in your free time.
BG: When I first started out in my career, I was warned how SaaS and subscriptions are long-term reward models, meaning it can take months or even years to see the rewards for the changes you make today. That means I’ve always made sure I have hobbies with instant gratification!
At the moment, I’ve been trying my hand at jewelry and tapestry which I’ve been really enjoying. I did actually try taxidermy at one point, which was interesting but probably just a one off.
I also travel a lot. I have spent time living in Hamburg and Copenhagen. Whenever I’m in the Nordic countries I love to go wild camping – it gives me a real ‘different world’ feel. It’ll be great to get out there again when the lockdown is lifted.
